Prune when trees are dormant in late Winter
Start with a saw- undercut the branch then fully remove, then move on to hand pruners- prune to an outward facing bud, and be sure to spray tools with disinfectant between each tree to prevent disease spread
3 D’s dead, damaged, diseased/dying
4 C’s crossing, crowding, crouching, creeping- rootstock sprouts growing up can overtake the scion graft
Consider nontoxic dormant bud sprays to prevent pest emergence, and early fungus and mold outbreaks
